01 / How to read the comparison
Methodology & limits
What counts as “usual”?
A video’s captured views divided by the exact median views in that creator’s recent baseline. At least 10 observations are required; YouTube baselines scan up to 60 recent posts. A multiple of 2x means twice that median. Missing values stay missing.
We use unrounded medians, including the average of the two middle observations for an even sample. These ratios may differ slightly from rounded multiples elsewhere on the site.
What do the labels mean?
“Disclosed” means the library found public evidence of a creator–brand relationship, such as #ad. The label belongs to that relationship; it does not prove each video carried its own disclosure, or reveal a fee or advertising budget.
“Organic” means the library found no commercial tie and the creator also posted about competing tools. It is not proof that no payment occurred. Unknown relationships and inferred commercial ties are excluded from both groups.
Records, rather than unique videos
The unit is a video paired with a brand. Of 489 disclosed records, 462 qualify; of 353 organic records, 279 qualify. Disclosed exclusions are 22 missing baselines and 5 baselines with too few observations. Organic exclusions are 70 missing baselines, 2 thin baselines and 2 missing view counts.
The organic group contains 275 distinct videos; the disclosed group contains 462. No video appears in both groups. Counting each video once gives 56.4% organic (155 of 275) and 34.6% disclosed (160 of 462) reaching 2x.
What the robustness check changes
The target video appears in 285 disclosed and 130 organic baselines. Removing it leaves 460 disclosed and 278 organic records with at least 10 observations. Their median multiples are 1.15x and 2.94x, respectively.
Baselines describe recent content at capture time, rather than content strictly before the target’s publication. An older video can therefore be compared with a newer creator baseline.
Where the comparison stops
Selection and concentration. The library is built through targeted research, not random sampling. Brand mix, discovery and review choices affect what enters it. Creator, brand and multi-brand records are related observations. There is no matched comparison, significance test or confidence interval, and no estimate of incremental views or return on investment.
Different ages and capture windows. Disclosed view observations span August 15–September 21, 2026; organic observations span August 18–October 3, 2026. Publication dates span July 4, 2018–September 14, 2026 and November 6, 2011–September 16, 2026, respectively. These are not views measured at a fixed time after publication.
YouTube only. This is not a Shorts-only study. Instagram and TikTok are excluded from the main comparison: Instagram multiples use likes, and each platform has only 2 organic records in the sample.
A frozen historical snapshot. The analysis was extracted October 25, 2026 from the published October 7 snapshot. View counts and baseline medians were checked against stored observations from before that snapshot. We did not replay every source video in this pass; public links may change and current counters may differ. Relationship labels are research judgments, rather than transaction records.

The source table includes eligible and excluded rows, public video links, historical metrics, baseline summaries and our derived ratios. The summary table includes the main comparison, unique-video counts, the baseline check and a creator-weighted sensitivity check. For that last check, the denominator counts creators, rather than videos.
The downloadable baseline summaries do not contain the individual baseline observations, so they cannot independently reproduce every baseline median.
